He Set The World On Fire – Phil Dusenberry

by Robert

Picture 3
We recently discovered this 2005 book by the late great Phil Dusenberry and can’t put it down (Ok, we work 23 hours a day, but hour 24 is devoted to reading). Then We Set His Hair on Fire contains many of the stories from a hall-of-fame advertising career that included work for some of the biggest brands in the world such as GE, FedEx, Pepsi, Visa, Gillette, Pizza Hut and HBO. But it’s his advice on discovering insight that is so invaluable. It’s not just a great advertising book. It’s an essential business book from the man who also happened to co-write The Natural, one of the greatest sports movies of all time. Want to know how to create a brand that really stands for something? Grab this book then join us during hour 24. Check it out.

Never Better Than When It’s Down – Up

by Robert

Up_Poster.JPG
The animated movie Up is now available on disc. This, of course, it not news. We just want to pay tribute to the brilliance of this love story. The first 12 minutes of this film are simply magical. Not because of how high they take you, but how low. There hasn't been another opening sequence, live action or otherwise, that can match its heartfelt power. Credit simply brilliant storytelling and a superb score by Michael Giacchino. And just when you think Up couldn't possibly tug at you any harder, it grabs you again at the end of the second act. Superb. Check it out.

Joking in the Boys Room

by Robert

A big shout out (Do people still say that?) to Edge Designs, an all-female interior design company that specializes in office spaces. They were tasked with designing the space of another female-run company and decided to have some fun with the men’s room. Potty humor at its finest.

Just Peachy – Plum Consumer Rewards

by Robert

Picture 5
We’re always looking for new ways to engage consumers and build loyalty, so Plum Rewards caught our eye when we spotted a local sandwich restaurant using it as a frequency program. Plum enables you to send timely coupons and promotions as text messages to your customers on their cell phone while being able to track their visits and coupon redemptions at your business. It works using a PDA-style PlumReward device that consumers enter their cell numbers into every time they visit. You can also include the program in your other marketing efforts as well. Pretty cool. Check it out.

Contra Band – Vampire Weekend

by Robert

Picture 3
First thing you should know about Vampire Weekend and the band’s great new album Contra: this is not a goth band and nothing on the album is remotely associated with vampires. It’s not dark, moody or sullenly New Moonish. It is, however, light, breezy and bouncy. It has an upbeat Police meets UB40 meets Paul Simon’s Graceland meets Ray Davies vibe with a strand of electronica woven throughout. Don’t let the name fool you. Vampire weekend is not out for blood. They’re out for fun. You can listen to Contra for free on their site. Check it out.

Client Spotlight – Danbury Volkswagen is #1

by Robert

Unknown
Congratulations to Weeks Automotive Group. Its Danbury Volkswagen dealership was Connecticut’s largest volume VW dealer in 2009, a title it earned without resorting to typical car dealer gimmicks or giveaways. Weeks was our very first client and we’re proud of the work we’ve produced with them the past nine years. It’s an honor to be part of their success. Check them out.

Cluster-F – CrunchPad is Dead

by Robert

Cdba
Two weeks prior to launch and the CrunchPad is dead. If you don’t know what CrunchPad is you may have wanted to. Hell, Joe went into a fetal position when he heard the news. We think he’s still under his desk. You see, Joe’s a gadget guy and he wanted to get his hands on this low cost tablet PC designed for web surfing. It looked like a really big iPhone. But as often happens greed and jealousy got in the way. So no CrunchPad…for now. They were too close. We have a feeling we’ll see something similar in the not too distant future. Check it out.
